An agreement has been reached between the Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District and its employees, ending a months-long contract standoff that included last-minute extensions and threats of a strike.
The MTD announced Friday that it had reached a deal with representatives of Teamster Local 186, who represented three units of the MTD’s employees – drivers, mechanics, and management.
“A majority of Santa Barbara MTD bus operators and operations supervisors employees represented by Teamsters Local 186 bargaining units have voted to support a tentative agreement on a new three-year collective bargaining agreement,” said MTD spokesperson Hillary Blackerby in a statement.
The new contract will include an 11.25% wage increase over 36 months and other benefits, according to MTD. Other benefit details were not described in the initial statement.
The previous contract for MTD employees was originally set to expire at the end of June, but the two sides agreed to extend it for a month to allow for more negotiations. The two sides were unable to come to an agreement over pay increases and benefits.
One of the units, which represents mechanics, reached an agreement with the MTD in August. The mechanics unit also agreed to an 11.25% pay raise over the next three years.
Now that an agreement has been reached, the contract must be voted on by the MTD’s Board of Directors. The board will meet on Tuesday in Santa Barbara.
