The City of Santa Barbara plans to cut down 33 trees in an effort to improve bicycle and pedestrian pathways on the Westside.

The proposal to topple the trees is scheduled to go before the city’s Parks & Recreation Commission at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The project includes construction of one mile of protected bike paths along Modoc Road and near La Cumbre Junior High School. The path will connect to the Las Positas/Modoc Multiuse Path and the neighborhood on Gillespie and San Pascual streets.

The trees proposed to be removed range from king palms and eucalyptus to jacaranda and oaks.

Of the 33 trees, 30 street trees proposed for removal are located within the city’s public right-of-way. The city is seeking approval from property owners for the remaining three trees, according to a staff report.

About 40 locations have been identified for potential new street trees.

The project also includes sidewalk infill on Valerio Street, Manitou Road, Pedregosa Street, Arrellaga Street, Calle Real and Euclid Avenue. The new crosswalks and safety enhancements include curb extensions, rapid flashing beacons, and new lighting along San Andres Street and Modoc Road.
