A Santa Barbara woman has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following a fatal crash involving a vehicle and an electric bicycle on State Street Sunday night.

Police arrested Christina Almada, 36, for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence causing injury, and driving without a license, according to Santa Barbara Police Sgt. Bryan Kerr.

At approximately 9:37 p.m. Sunday, Santa Barbara police, fire, and an American Medical Response ambulance responded to a report of a traffic collision involving a black SUV and bicyclist on the 1900 block of State Street.

First responders determined that the bicyclist suffered major injuries, Kerr said. They attempted lifesaving measures, however, the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

The investigation revealed that Almada, the driver of the black SUV, was traveling south on State Street when the bicyclist may have veered or turned in front of her vehicle, according to Kerr.

“During their investigation, investigators noticed that Almada was displaying symptoms of alcohol intoxication. A DUI investigation ensued, and Almada was subsequently arrested for DUI,” police said.

Almada was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on $100,000 bail.

Santa Barbara police are investigating the collision. The name of the bicyclist has not been released as of Monday, pending the notification of their next of kin.
