A Santa Barbara Police officer was reportedly injured on Saturday after a vehicle theft suspect backed the car into the officer while trying to evade capture.

Kevin Benitez-Carbajal, 24, of Santa Barbara was arrested on multiple misdemeanor and felony charges including vehicle theft, vandalism, resisting an officer, and for hit and run causing injury, according to arrest logs.

Santa Barbara police officers were patrolling the 1100 block of Mercedes Lane Saturday evening when they found a possible stolen vehicle in a shared parking lot, the department said in a statement Monday.

Officers approached the vehicle and met Benitez-Carbajal who was in the driver’s seat. The man “attempted to elude capture” by reversing the car out of the parking space, and he hit one of the officers, causing minor injuries, police said.

Officers than deployed a conducted energy device, commonly known as a Taser-like device, and after a brief struggle, Benitez-Carbajal was taken into custody, police said.

The injured officer was treated at Santa Barbara Cottage hospital and then discharged, police said.

Police reported that Benitez-Carbajal was booked on a $500,000 bail but Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office custody records show that he was being held without bail as of Monday.
