In a surprise decision, the City of Santa Barbara selected John Doimas as the new city attorney.
The City Council announced the decision on Tuesday.
Current City Attorney Sarah Knecht is retiring at the end of 2025.
Doimas was not the only internal candidate to apply for the job.
He is originally from Chicago, and earned his law degree from Loyola University Chicago. He also has a bachelor’s degree in political science and history from DePaul University.
“I am truly honored to be appointed as city attorney for such an incredible and vibrant community as Santa Barbara,” Doimas told Noozhawk. “With the talented and dedicated individuals in the City Attorney’s Office, I am confident that we will continue to provide the highest level of legal support to the City Council, the City Administrator’s Office, all city departments, and our boards and commissions.
“I look forward to working collaboratively to support the important work of this city and to serve with integrity, diligence and care.”
Doimas was hired by the city in 2012.
