A 54-year-old Santa Barbara teacher was arrested Friday on suspicion of child molestation after a previous arrest in July for secretly recording minors at the school where he worked.

Detectives identified Steven Schapansky of Goleta as a suspect in a child molestation case while investigating him for secret recording devices found in his possession in July, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Raquel Zick said Friday.

Sheriff’s detectives arrested Schapansky on Friday around 10 a.m. in Fresno with help from the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, she said.

Schapansky was booked into the Northern Branch Jail, where he is being held on a $100,000 bail, Zick said.

He also was arrested July 12 after law enforcement received reports of secret recording devices found in his possession.

Sheriff’s Lt. Jarrett Morris said at the time that deputies found recordings from various Santa Barbara Charter School locations where minors would change their clothing.

Laura Donner, the director of education at Santa Barbara Charter School, said Schapansky no longer works at the school and that his teaching contract ended June 7.

Last month, a legal claim for personal injuries and damages was filed against Schapansky on behalf of a 13-year-old female who attorneys say was recorded by him.

On July 24, Ximena Cristina Cullen, the director of operations at Santa Barbara Charter School, filed a petition for a workplace violence restraining order against Schapansky.

Cullen also filed a request for a temporary restraining order against Schapansky, with the school listed as the protected party, according to Superior Court records.

In the petition to the court, Cullen wrote that Schapansky filmed staff and students without their knowledge and that he had caused emotional harm.

The hearing for the restraining orders is scheduled for later in September, according to Superior Court records.
