Two of Santa Barbara’s leading youth water polo programs – Santa Barbara 805 Water Polo Club and Santa Barbara Unified Water Polo Club – have officially joined forces to launch Santa Barbara Water Polo Club (SBWPC), creating a single, united home for local athletes, families, and fans.

The merger marks a major milestone in Santa Barbara’s storied water polo tradition, combining the strengths of both organizations – players, coaches, staff, and history – into one consistent pathway for athletes ages 3 to 18.
The club’s mission is to provide the strongest possible foundation for athlete development while promoting a positive, inclusive, and community-driven culture.
“This is an incredibly exciting and meaningful step forward for water polo in Santa Barbara,” said Kelsie Karam, Director of Santa Barbara Water Polo Club. “By coming together under one banner, we can better serve our athletes, our families, and our community.
“Our goal is to ensure every player – from beginner to elite – has access to high-quality coaching, consistent development, and a clear path through the sport.”
Highlights of the New SBWPC Structure
- One Club, One Pathway: Comprehensive programming from learn-to-swim through 18U competition, ensuring continuity and growth for every athlete.
- Unified Leadership: A coordinated coaching team and streamlined communication channels to better support families and players.
- Community Focus: Renewed partnerships with local schools and pools, emphasizing sportsmanship, mentorship, and accessibility.
- High School Boys Program Leadership: Coach Brian “Chuckie” Roth will serve as Director of the High School Boys program, bringing proven leadership and success, including guiding the former SBU 16U team to a Junior Olympics gold medal.
- Continuing Legacy: Cathy Neushul, one of Santa Barbara’s most respected and accomplished water polo coaches, will continue to play an active role within the program. A storied figure in the sport and a cornerstone of Santa Barbara’s water polo legacy, Neushul’s ongoing involvement reflects the club’s commitment to both excellence and continuity.
“Our coaching team remains deeply committed to athlete development,” added Karam. “We’re focused on building confidence, character, and skill – on and off the pool deck. Together, we’re creating something special for Santa Barbara’s next generation of water polo players.”
The newly unified Santa Barbara Water Polo Club will continue to offer a full range of competitive and developmental programs, including introductory swim lessons, age-group training, and elite travel teams.
The club’s unified structure will also strengthen its ability to host events, partner with local schools, and represent the Santa Barbara community at regional and national competitions.
“This merger isn’t just about programs – it’s about people,” said Karam. “We’re proud to honor the traditions that brought us here while building a stronger, more connected future for water polo in our community.”
