Santa Barbara’s Davis Flanagin qualified in two events for next week’s CIF-SS Division 2 Finals, after his performances in Saturday’s Prelims in Ventura.
Andreas Dybdahl and Gianna Stump were also Finals qualifiers for the Dons, and Anne Knecht is an alternate.
Flanagin will be the Finals’ 5th seed in both the long jump and triple jump, after jumps Saturday of 21-8.5 and 43-11.75, respectively.
“Davis has gotten really good at managing these sorts of meets,” Santa Barbara coach Olivia Perdices said. “He did what he needed to keep jumping another week.”
Andreas Dybdahl won his heat in the 1600 meters in 4:16.17, and goes through as the 3rd seed in that event.
“He made a little move to get out of traffic just before 400 meters to go, then just gapped the field 200 meters out,” Perdices said. “It’s his first track finals, and the race is going to be loaded next week. It’s going to be a fun one to watch.”
Gianna Stump advances to the Finals as the 5th seed in the triple jump, after a jump of 35-6.75.
“She jumped really consistently today and got her first trip to the finals out of it,” Perdices said.
Anne Knecht was 10th in the 1600 meters, with 5:17.25, and is an alternate for the Finals. Sierra Gronquist ends her season at 14th in the pole vault with 9-9.
“An outstanding year for both of them to accomplish what they did coming off injuries into new events in a really tough league and division,” Perdices said.
San Marcos
The Royals’ Makenzie Fauver won her heat of the 100 hurdles at the Prelims in 15.47 seconds, and advances as the 3rd seed overall for the finals next week.
Fauver also qualified in the 300 hurdles, seeded 6th overall heading into next week.
“Makenzie ran two great hurdle races today,” San Marcos coach Marilyn Hantgin said. “She is a true competitor and seems to step up when the pressure is on.”
Ava Carter had a great day qualifying in both the 100 and the 200 meters, with times of 12.41 and 25.51, respectively.
“It has always been very difficult to qualify for finals in the 100 and 200 meter races,” Hantgin said. “For Ava to qualify in both races was so exciting.”
Avery Leck, a freshman, qualified in the high jump, clearing 5 feet.
“Avery is still just learning how to high jump,” Hantgin said. “Having these experiences jumping in CIF competitions will help in her development as a track athlete.”
Kiala Haas ran a season best of 2:19.55 for 10th place in the 800 meters, and will be the 1st alternate for next week.
“Kiala ran a perfect race to improve on her best time by 2 seconds,” Hantgin said. “I hope she will get the chance to run again next week.”
The girls’ 4×400 qualified with a 7th place to move on to next week.
“Ava Carter, Makenzie Fauver, Avery Leck and Kiala Haas ran a season best of 4:06.6,” Hantgin said. “All of these girls ran well today. I know next week we can go even faster. They should all be very proud of their performances today.”
For the boys, Ethan Ball ran both hurdle races and did not qualify, “but as only a sophomore to get this valuable experience is so important,” Hantgin said.
“Ethan is a fighter, and I know he will continue to work hard and reach the goals he has set for himself.”
In other San Marcos results, Easton Rose finished 17th in the long jump, Kate Edgar finished 16th in the long jump and 17th in the 100 hurdles, Dylan Briner tied her personal best in the 200 with 22.74, and Lucas Chin jumped 6-0 in the high jump.
Dos Pueblos
Elizabeth Yancey qualified for the Division 2 finals in the long jump and the 100 hurdles. She finished ninth in the hurdles in a PR of 16.03 and went 16-6 in the long jump to place eighth.
“This double accomplishment moves her one round further than last year,” said coach David Jackson.
Seniors Eoghan Gloster and Colby Todd competed in their final high school pole vault competition, and both Chargers equalled their lifetime best heights: Gloster cleared 12-3, while Colby cleared 11-9.
The boys 4x100m relay team of Cole Adair, Gabriel Runyen, Joel Felix, and Dylan Orquiola ran a season’s best of 43.94 seconds, finishing fourth in their heat. This was the fastest time since 2015.
“With the return of three team members, the Chargers hope to fill the large shoes left by Orquiola,” said Jackson.
In the 400, senior Conor Dolan set a personal record 51.76 seconds with his fourth-place finish in the second heat. The second heat also featured sophomore Andy Brennan, finishing seventh.
The 4x400m relay team of Brennan, Dolan, Andrew Gentry, and Orquiola placed second in their heat by .02 seconds but did not advance to the Finals at Moorpark next Saturday. The narrow defeat to Marian bumped the Chargers from fourth to 11th with their time of 3:29.95.
In the girls 3200, senior Phoebe Wolfe Lyons finished in 16th place with a 11:49.
“This concludes Phoebe’s long and successful career at Dos Pueblos. The Chargers are proud to see her advance to the next stage at Claremont McKenna College this fall,” said Jackson.
