The Santa Maria High School FFA Leadership team and advisors recently hosted the 2nd Annual Greenhand Leadership Conference, designed to introduce new FFA (Future Farmers of America) members to the programs opportunities.
Nearly 130 new members and 35 student leaders participated.
The new members, primarily freshmen, were divided into six groups, each with an assigned group leader and team name.
They then rotated through workshops that included topics about Animal Science, Ornamental Horticulture, FFA Uniform Etiquette, Floral Design, FFA Alumni Panel, and Agriculture Mechanics.
At the end of the event, students received a barbecue lunch and a commemorative t-shirt.
“I enjoyed learning about farm power and agriculture mechanics, I am very excited and plan to get more involved in Santa Maria FFA,” said freshman Angel Ramos.
“I had a great time and enjoyed talking with the alumni because they showed me how FFA can have a lasting impact on my future,” said Emma Richards, also a freshman.
Sophomore Evoleth Barragan said, “As a group leader I enjoyed engaging with the first-year members, and seeing their enthusiasm and excitement for Santa Maria FFA.”
“As a group leader to over 25 new members it was a fun experience,’’ said sophomore Valeria Palacios. “I had a good time with the freshmen, interacting with them, and getting them excited about our FFA program.’’
