The music program at Santa Maria High School has been recognized with the prestigious 2026 Best Communities for Music Education Award, presented by the NAMM Foundation.
The honor makes Santa Maria High the first school in the district, and in the surrounding region, to receive this national distinction.

The Best Communities for Music Education Award celebrates schools and districts across the U.S. that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to ensuring all students have access to high-quality music education opportunities.
The recognition highlights the dedication of students, teachers, families, administrators, and community supporters who continue to invest in arts education and student success.
At SMHS, students have access to a variety of performing arts opportunities through programs including guitar, theater, band, jazz and choir, the district said.
“These programs provide students with opportunities to develop creativity, collaboration, leadership, discipline, and confidence both inside and outside the classroom,” school officials said.
Students regularly participate in concerts, performances, festivals, and community events throughout the year, showcasing the impact and value of arts education within the school community.
“This recognition reflects the incredible work of our students, staff, families, and community supporters,” said Samantha Bunten, band and choir director.
“Music and the arts play a vital role in student growth and school culture, and we are honored to be recognized on a national level for the opportunities we provide our students,” Bunten said.
“Theater provides a unique space for students to explore empathy, storytelling, and collaboration.” said theater teacher Gaspar Onofre-Almanza. “Many students are involved in multiple performing arts.
“By bridging different artistic worlds, our students develop a deeper level of artistry and character, and they become even more amazing individuals in the process.”
“Whether you’re learning your very first chords or ready to perform in an ensemble, Beginning Guitar, Intermediate Guitar and Guitar Orchestra classes offer every student the opportunity to grow as a musician, build confidence, and make music together.” said guitar teacher John VanWie.
The NAMM Foundation traces its roots back to 1903 through the establishment of the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM), an organization dedicated to supporting and advancing music-making opportunities.
Since the early 2000s, the NAMM Foundation has placed a strong emphasis on music education advocacy and access in schools across the country.
The award recognizes schools that demonstrate outstanding achievement in areas such as funding, participation, instruction, facilities, community engagement, and overall commitment to music education.
Receiving this honor places Santa Maria High School among a select group of schools nationwide recognized for excellence in arts education.
As the first recipient of this award within the district and surrounding area, SMHS hopes this recognition will continue to inspire support for music and arts education opportunities for all students.
