A Santa Maria man was arrested late Friday in connection with a shooting and attempted robbery, according to the Santa Maria Police Department.

Irwin Lara, 32, was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, and being an accessory to a crime.

Officers responded at around 9:30 p.m. to the 300 block of North Oakley Street for a report of a shooting, Lt. Matthew Kline said.

Two Hispanic men “approached a victim and attempted to rob him,” Kline said.

One of the suspects had an AR-15-style rifle, per Kline.

“During the attempted robbery, the victim was shot in the leg. The victim was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive,” he said.

The suspects drove away in a vehicle, and police used license plate reader technology to find it, Kline said.

Police located Lara at his residence and took him into custody without incident.

The second suspect had not been apprehended as of Saturday morning.

Court records show Lara has been convicted of a handful of misdemeanors and felonies stretching back over a decade, including damaging jail property, possession of a controlled substance, exhibiting a deadly weapon that was not a firearm, possessing/purchasing narcotics for sale, and vehicle theft.
