A 22-year-old Santa Maria man has been identified as the driver killed in a head-on crash near Orcutt Monday night that also critically injured a Lompoc woman.

Kevin Robert Reyes was pronounced dead at the scene of the two-vehicle collision on Highway 135, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau.

The crash involving a 2020 Honda Accord and a 2022 Toyota RAV4 occurred at about 6:45 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Highway 135, about half a mile south of Clark Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to the scene, along with a Calstar medical helicopter, an AMR ambulance, sheriff’s deputies, and the CHP.

Reyes was traveling the wrong way on Highway 135 when the vehicles collided head on, CHP Officer Maria Barriga said Tuesday.

Reyes was driving the Accord northbound in a southbound lane at an unknown speed, Barriga added, when the front of his vehicle slammed into the front of the RAV4.

The driver of the RAV4, who had to be extricated from the wreckage, suffered major injuries, and was flown to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Safechuck said.

The 27-year-old Lompoc woman’s name and details on her condition were not available.

It’s not known whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision, which remained under investigation.

Both southbound lanes were blocked by the wreckage, according to the CHP, and the highway was closed at Clark Avenue for a time Monday night.
