Local families are invited to enjoy the experience of Silent Film with Live Orchestra at the Santa Maria Philharmonic Society’s third concert of the season.

The Philharmonic Society will screen “Safety Last!” a 1923 American silent film best known for its inventive stunts and suspenseful humor, Feb. 28 at Grace Baptist Church in Santa Maria.

Shot a century ago, the movie remains so impressive that in 2001, the American Film Institute (AFI) recognized it as the 97th Most Exciting American Film of All-Time, organizers said.

The film stars Harold Lloyd, one of the masterminds of cinematic comedy, as a small-town man who moves to the city to make something of himself.

While working as a department store clerk, he pretends to his sweetheart that he’s a big success. To earn quick money and impress her, he gets caught up in a publicity stunt that leads to the film’s famous climax: Lloyd dangling from the hands of a skyscraper clock.
