The Santa Maria Philharmonic Society (SMPS) will open its 2025-26 season with an evening of classical music celebrating the 150th birthday of composer Maurice Ravel, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 27, at Grace Baptist Church, Santa Maria.
A pre-concert lecture will be held at 6:50 p.m.
The program features three works that showcase the breadth and beauty of classical repertoire, SMPS said.
“We will begin with Beethoven’s ‘Leonore Overture No. 3, Op. 138,’ where you can experience the dramatic power that opens his beloved opera ‘Fidelio,’ ” SMPS said. “The centerpiece of our program is Ravel’s ‘Piano Concerto in G Major,’ featuring renowned specialist soloist Gwendolyn Mok in this special birthday tribute to the master composer.
“We will conclude with Copland’s ‘Billy the Kid Suite,’ taking you on a musical journey to the American West through Copland’s vivid storytelling.”
