Two people received non-life-threatening wounds Sunday afternoon in a shooting at a Santa Maria park.
At approximately 1:15 p.m., personnel from the Santa Maria Police and Fire departments along with an American Medical Response ambulance crew, were dispatched to Minami Park at the corner of West Battles Road and South Depot Street after callers reported two people had been shot, Sgt. Andrew Brice said.
Police found two adult male victims, each with a single gunshot wound, at the scene.
“Officers learned a large peaceful gathering was taking place at the park before the uninvited suspects arrived,” Lt. Daniel Rios of the Detective Bureau said Monday. ” The suspects confronted guests of the gathering/event shortly before the shooting occurred. The suspects fled the area prior to officers’ arrival.
Both were expected to survive, Brice said.
They were taken to Marian Regional Medical Center.
Their names and details on their conditions were not available.
Detectives and crime scene technicians were sent to the scene for the investigation that was still in early stages.
More than an hour after the shooting, multiple patrol vehicles remained near the park, and yellow crime scene tape cordoned off a large area of the park that typically attracts multiple families for gatherings on the weekends.
