Two teenagers were wounded in a shooting near a Santa Maria fast food restaurant early Friday morning, leading police to arrest a father and a son hours later.
At approximately 12:50 a.m., Santa Maria police officers and firefighters were dispatched to the incident on the 400 block of East Betteravia Road.
American Medical Response ambulance personnel also were sent to the scene.
“An altercation between two groups had escalated into a shooting, resulting in two victims sustaining gunshot wounds,” said Lt. Daniel Rios .
Two injured males, whose names weren’t released, were transported to Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment.
An 18-year-old was in critical condition, while a 17-year-old sustained injuries that are not life-threatening, Rios said.
Santa Maria police detectives and crime scene technicians responded to investigate the incident.
Rios said detectives identified two suspects in connection with the shooting: Casey Jose Pacheco Hernandez, 41, of Santa Maria and his 19-year-old son, Casey Hernandez Jr. of Oceano.
On Friday afternoon, detectives, supported by the SWAT team, executed a warrant at Pacheco Hernandez’s Santa Maria residence, where he was taken into custody.
His son was apprehended around 6:30 p.m. in Oceano, where detectives and the SWAT team conducted a second warrant service operation.
The vehicle reportedly used during the crime was found abandoned in Santa Maria, and has since been secured as evidence, Rios said.
Both suspects were booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, with bail set at $2 million each.
Detectives, along with a victim-witness advocate, are actively providing support to the victims’ families, Rios added.
