A week after a single-vehicle crash killed a Santa Maria resident and injured several others at Vandenberg Space Force Base, federal officials remain mum about the details.

Emergency crews responded at approximately 1 a.m. Nov. 1 to the intersection of Highway 1 and California Boulevard for a crash reportedly involving a carload of teenagers.

Vandenberg officials only confirmed one person died and three others were injured in the incident.

On Friday, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau identified the person who died as Julian Mateo Lopez, 18, of Santa Maria.

Other details typically provided after a vehicle crash being investigated by federal officials have not been released.

“Vandenberg Space Force Base is investigating the November 1st vehicle accident that occurred at the Santa Maria Gate entry point and is coordinating with all relevant law enforcement agencies,” said Jennifer Green-Lanchoney, public affairs chief for Space Launch Delta 30 at Vandenberg.

Due to the ongoing investigation, she added, “there is nothing further to provide at this time.”

Representatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed they are involved in the investigation.

“The FBI is assisting local law enforcement partners in the investigation of a vehicle crash that occurred Friday morning at Vandenberg Space Force Base. As this is an ongoing investigation, no further information will be released at this time,” said Lourdes Arocho, FBI Los Angeles public information officer.

The incident occurred on an area considered federal property, and not concurrent jurisdiction.

The incident involved a carload of teenagers with alcohol reportedly suspected as being a factor in the crash, according to law enforcement sources.
