Santa Ynez jumped on Bishop Diego from the opening tip and had five players score in double figures in an 80-60 non-league boys basketball win over the visiting Cardinals on Wednesday.
The Pirates (14-3) held Bishop Diego to 24 points in the first half.
“We came out of the gate playing unbelievable defense,” said Santa Ynez coach Rod Caughell.
The Pirates got it done on the offensive end, too.
Jackson Ollenburger led Santa Ynez with 24 points and dished out nine assists. Caleb Cassidy scored 19 points and was a force on the boards with 23 rebounds. Hale Durbiano had 14 points, Jaiden Mendoza scored 11 and Landon Lassahn chipped in 10.
Bryan Trejo scored 20 points and Qu’Ran Gossett had 13 to lead Bishop Diego.
“I felt they came out with some intensity and good ball movement, which caused us to be a little slow on our rotations and that hurt us,” said Bishop coach James Coronado. “Our slow rotations also allowed them some open looks and they knocked them down.
“I was proud of our guys for never giving in and making a couple of runs in the second half, but it just wasn’t enough today. We’ll be back, I’m sure of it.”
