Santa Barbara won two Saturday on the closing day of the Arroyo Grande Tournament, beating Clovis 9-8 on a late goal by Ryder Green and then prevailing over Garces Memorial by a 9-6 score.
Against Clovis, the Dons trailed 8-7 in the final four minutes, before Shane Davis scored to tie the game.
Green scored his game-winner with 10 seconds left. Both final goals were assisted by John Shafer.
Jerrad Burford scored four goals to lead the Dons’ attack against Garces. Green added two goals and five steals, Mateo Obando had three assists and two steals, and senior Ethan Camp scored his first varsity goal.
Jaxon Burford had 18 saves and four steals in the two games combined.
Santa Barbara is now 4-1 and travels to Newbury Park on Tuesday, with a 3:15 p.m. start.
Dos Pueblos
Dos Pueblos also closed out Arroyo Grande Tournament play with two wins, defeating Clovis West 11-7 and Santa Ynez 12-5.
The Chargers struggled with foul trouble in the first game, losing two starters by the first minute of the fourth quarter. The team tightened the defense, allowing only one fourth quarter goal while scoring three.
Jaden Moore had a strong match with five goals, three steals and two assists. Liam Sommer added two goals, and “played some big minutes down the stretch,” Charger coach Chris Parrish said.
Dos Pueblos overcame a 3-2 first quarter deficit against the Pirates with a five-goal second quarter on the way to the 12-5 win.
Senior Brody Luke finished with a game-high 6 goals. Jaden Moore directed the defense to hold the Pirates to only two goals in the final three periods.
Other notable contributors cited by coach Parrish were Liam Sommer, Aden Bishop, Jonny Bish, and Cody Pearce. Goalie Reggie Robles stabilized the defense with several great blocks and three steals.
“I am pleased to see the incremental development in the team over the course of the tournament,” Parrish said. “We have miles to go but each player is contributing and motivating each other to get better every day.”
Dos Pueblos, now 4-1, plays at Morro Bay Tuesday afternoon.
