Santa Barbara No. 1 singles player Sophia Ostovany continued her Channel League dominance, sweeping her sets in a 17-1 win over Dos Pueblos in girls tennis on Friday.
With that win, Santa Barbara clinches the league title with an 8-0 record.
“Sophia’s preparation, intensity and quality are impressive and improving,” said Santa Barbara coach Danny Echt. “It’s a pleasure to coach a player so motivated to improve herself and her team.”
Among other winners for Santa Barbara, the doubles team of senior captain Natalie Brewer and junior Katie Clyne won two sets.
The Chargers’ lone set was won by the doubles team of Cami Chou and Chloe Harrah. Dos Pueblos is 6-2 both overall and league play.
In the boys’ competition, Dos Pueblos returned in kind, beating the Dons 17-1.
In singles, Will Steinberg swept his sets 6-2, 6-0, 6-0 and Ryan Belkin 6-3, 6-1, 6-0.
“I was impressed with the focus of our team today versus the Dons,” Dos Pueblos coach Laura Housinger said. “I tried out some new combos in doubles which had great success, even putting the Truong brothers (Daniel and Franklin) together which was a lot of fun for them.”
Dons Sophomore Kai Yakushko at No. 1 singles won the only set for Santa Barbara.
The Dos Pueblos boys are now 7-1 in Channel League play and 8-1 overall, while Santa Barbara is 5-3 in league play.
