Santa Barbara police were investigating an apparent drive-by shooting that occurred Sunday afternoon on the city’s Eastside.

The incident, involving multiple gunshots, occurred shortly before 2 p.m. in the area of Punta Gorda and Salinas streets.

Police were alerted to the situation by several 9-1-1 calls.

Police spokesman Anthony Wagner confirmed there was a shooting, and said the first officers to arrive found numerous shell casings on the ground.

There were no reports of injuries, Wagner said, and investigators were on scene gathering evidence.

Police made a high-risk traffic stop on the 1500 block of Santa Barbara Street of a vehicle occupied by “an involved party,” Wagner said, but it was unclear how it related to the shooting.

There were three people in the vehicle, but Wagner would not comment on whether they were detained or arrested.

Witnesses told Noozhawk the vehicle had been struck by gunfire.

Investigators also recovered a handgun found at the scene.

Police were looking for surveillance video that might help them in the investigation, Wagner said.
