A week after a Santa Barbara Teachers Association survey criticized district Superintendent Hilda Maldonado, school board member Virginia Alvarez opens up about her thoughts on Maldonado, the survey, and the fact that it was leaked to members of the public.
Alvarez was elected to the school board a year ago.
She said one of her goals is to make teachers feel included and part of the conversation when it comes to policies related to education.
“If the teachers are not in the room, it is not going to work,” Alvarez said. “I guarantee you that 100%.”
Alvarez said she wants to make a “systemic difference” in schools that is going to help all the kids.

Alvarez talks about the recent controversial teachers survey, equity, ways to close the achievement gap and other policies.
She also talks about her own journey, coming to the United States in the fourth grade, and her experiences in schools.
