Rod Caughell is returning to coach the Santa Ynez High boys basketball team, Athletic Director Ashley Coelho announced Wednesday.

Caughell has coached basketball for Santa Ynez for 13 years, six of those at the varsity boys level. The Pirates made the CIF-SS playoffs in four of those six years, including a run to the quarterfinals.

“Rod was instrumental to establishing Pirate Pride and traditions in the basketball program in his 13 years,” said Coelho. “He is going to do great things with this program moving forward. His level of commitment to transforming the lives of young men on and off the court is incredible.  He has a passion for mentoring athletes and challenging them to be at their best in all aspects of their life.”

Caughell will be coaching the Pirates in the CIF Central Section in the winter. He replaces Walter Tyler, who resigned after two seasons.
