San Marcos claimed a third-place finish and Santa Barbara High fell in the consolation championship at the 16-team Santa Barbara Girls Volleyball Tournament of Champions on Saturday.

While the Royals and Dons led the local squads, Dos Pueblos and Bishop Diego also rounded out their weekends in the losers’ bracket.

San Marcos began its day in the championship bracket semifinals against Saint Francis.

The Royals came out of gates hot with back-to-back set wins to begin the match, but Saint Francis caught fire from there.

The Lancers rattled off three straight wins to secure the overall victory and punch their ticket to the championship, 22-25, 20-25, 25-15, 25-20, 15-9.

San Marcos then went on to cruise to a three-set sweep of Edison High in the third-place showdown, 25-13, 25-11, 25-18.

Senior outside hitter Charlotte Hastings led the Royals’ offense all weekend and was rewarded as the lone local player on the All-Tournament team.

Meanwhile, Santa Barbara High secured its spot in the consolation finals by pulling out a five-set victory over Mission Prep, 22-25, 25-17, 25-7, 9-25, 15-11.

However, the Dons then dropped their battle with Yorba Linda in four sets, 25-23, 16-25, 22-25, 15-25.

In the losers’ bracket, Bishop Diego emerged with a four-set win over crosstown foe Dos Pueblos, 25-19, 19-25, 25-17, 25-16.

However, the Cardinals then fell in straight sets to La Jolla in the 13th-place match, 13-25, 20-25.

Buchanan defeated St. Francis in a five-set thriller in the championship match, 22-25, 25-17, 25-23, 24-26, 15-10. Buchanan’s Peyton Trupng was named the Tournament MVP.
