The local trio of Santa Barbara High, Dos Pueblos and San Marcos opened the annual Santa Barbara Girls Volleyball Tournament of Champions on Friday.
The Dons, Chargers and Royals all dropped their opening matches to fall into the consolation bracket. The tournament will conclude at Santa Barbara High’s J.R. Richards Gym and San Marcos’ Thunderhut on Saturday.
In the first round of action, Santa Barbara High fell to San Clemente, Dos Pueblos dropped a matchup with Clovis East and San Marcos fell at the hands of Edison.
Their results pitted the Dons and Chargers against each other in the first round of the consolation bracket, and Santa Barbara High came out on top over its rival for the third time this season.
Meanwhile, the Royals had their first day of competition come to an end with a loss to Valencia.
Saturday will feature another crosstown rivalry matchup, as San Marcos and Dos Pueblos will clash for the second time this week on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. inside the Thunderhut. The Chargers swept the Royals on Tuesday.
The winner will face either Pasadena or Hart for 13th place at Santa Barbara High at 1:45 p.m.
The Dons are still in the hunt for the consolation championship and will compete in the consolation semifinals against Valencia on Saturday at 10:15 a.m. at Santa Barbara High.
The winner of that match will face the winner of Ventura High and Mission Prep in the consolation title match at 5:15 p.m. inside J.R. Richards Gym.
On the other side of the bracket, Notre Dame and Santa Monica will face off in one of the semifinal matches, and Edison will await the winner of San Clemente and Clovis East in the other semifinal.
