SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Santa Barbara City College Women’s Golf team finished the regular season with two quality WSC rounds—earning second at both. Aidie Smith earned an All-Conference nod with her top-10 overall finish for the season, and Head Coach Devin Engebretsen was selected as WSC Coach of the Year.
Doubling as the WSC Finals, the Vaqueros were the hosts, with Sunday’s round at the River Course at the Alisal in Solvang and then Santa Barbara Golf Club on Monday. The Vaqueros finished one point behind Allan Hancock for third place in the season standings.
All four of the Vaqueros’ top golfers in Sunday’s WSC #8 made the top 10—Aidie Smith (second), Jamaica Cook and Camryn Chapman (tied for seventh), and Julia Borejszo (10th). The only problem with that was that Canyons did the same thing, finishing two strokes better than Santa Barbara for the top spot. The Vaqueros were 25 strokes better than third-place Allan Hancock.
Monday’s WSC #9 was a different story with the same result. The Vaqueros were second again, albeit a distant one. Still, they were seven better than Hancock’s third-place score.
Smith shot identically across the two days. The first of her pair of 77s was easily good for second overall on Sunday and then top-five on Monday—four strokes off first place for both rounds.
Chapman was one stroke off of two top-10 finishes. Her 83 on Monday was good enough for 11th, despite being two strokes better than her seventh-place 85 the day prior. She birdied a hole on both rounds.
Cook’s 85 and 87 made her in the top 15 on both days. Borejszo did the same with an 87 and 86, birding two holes—including the 18th—on day two.
Engebretsen’s award, selected by his peers, comes as no surprise. SBCC Athletics’ Associate Athletic Director might be the only person in the state to be a head coach of three different programs. He also leads the Men’s Basketball team and is the co-head coach of the Men’s Golf team.
The Vaqueros look ahead to the two-day SoCal Championship hosted at El Prado Golf Course in Chino beginning on Sunday.
