WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – The Santa Barbara City College Women’s Soccer team (7-4, 2-0) won 2-0 at LA Pierce (4-4-2, 1-1) on Tuesday afternoon, thanks to two goals created by freshman phenom Morgan Retterer three minutes apart.
As the reigning conference champions, this was a big win for the Vaqueros. Pierce finished second in the Western State Conference (WSC) North last season, so beating them on the road is a strong endorsement of the quality of this year’s Vaqueros.
On a hot day in Los Angeles on turf, Santa Barbara looked positive early, and took an early lead. Only 15 minutes in, Retterer unleashed a screamer from 40 yards out to give the Vaqueros a deserved lead. Soon after, she swung in a free kick from the right wing that Ruby Kruse toed past the goalkeeper to put them up 2-0.
That would be all the scoring as the Vaqueros controlled the rest of the game. They outshot Pierce 7-2 in the first half, and then preserved the clean sheet despite 10 Pierce shots in the second half. Samantha Maytanes and Natalie Gonzalez combined to make six saves.
The Vaqueros end September as winners of three of their last four, and six of their last eight. They have a week off until they host Cuesta (6-3-1, 2-0) next Tuesday afternoon in a battle of WSC North unbeatens.
