SANTA MARIA, Calif. – The Santa Barbara City College Women’s Volleyball team (6-9, 1-0) swept their first conference match on the road Wednesday night at Allan Hancock (2-15, 0-1) behind dominant serving, particularly in the first two sets.

The Vaqueros ultimately won the opener 25-7, but the score began 9-0 and 17-1. After that, they cruised 25-10 in the second before a competitive 26-24 third-set win.

Remarkably, they hit .571 in the first set (9-1-14) while holding Hancock to -.417 (1-6-12). The second set was similar with a .500 hitting percentage (11-2-18), with the hosts still in the negative (3-4-14). Those stats evened out in the final set, but the Vaqueros still pulled out the victory.

By the sixth point of the match, four different Vaqueros had earned kills. Aubrielle LaPointe was one of them, and she added an ace to cap the 9-0 start. Morgane Breault then went on her own serving run, using three aces in the following 8-0 run.

Osby Judd-Wade later served three aces in a row—seven total for the Vaqueros in the set—to put the cherry on top of the team’s incredible first-set performance.

In the second set, the score was tied at 5-5 until Breault served three more aces in four points. The visitors’ small lead continued to 13-9; from there, they won 11 in a row, all the way to set point. This time, it was Brenna Owens‘ turn to serve three aces in a row as part of another dominant Vaqueros’ serving run.

Set three was a much different story, though. Hancock led by as many as six with the score 13-7, forcing a Santa Barbara timeout. Soon after, Judd-Wade took over, accounting for five points (four kills, one ace) in nine total rallies as the Vaqueros shrunk their deficit to 16-15.

They eventually tied it at 19-19, and the teams traded points to 23-23. Hancock survived the Vaqueros’ first match point at 24-23, but Judd-Wade again proved to be the difference-maker, earning the final two kills to end the set—26-24—and match.

Judd-Wade led the team in kills (12) and hitting percentage (.556) for the match. She was only second with four aces—tied with Owens—as Breault’s seven outpaced everybody. LaPointe hit .400 with 11 kills.

As a team, they hit .415 and served 18 aces in total.

The Vaqueros travel to No. 16 Moorpark (10-3, 1-0) on Friday at 6 p.m. for another conference matchup.
