Santa Barbara City College’s interim superintendent, Kindred Murillo, will be on the job until September 2023 now that the Board of Trustees extended her contract one year.

The previous employment agreement was for one year with a salary of $318,000, and it would have ended this September.

The trustees approved the extension at their Jan. 20 meeting and amended some terms, including a change from a monthly housing allowance to a one-time $10,000 stipend for moving expenses.

The termination clause was also deleted from the earlier contract, which said Murillo or the Board of Trustees could terminate the employment with a 30-day written notice.

Murillo was hired last year and brings decades of experience in the California Community Colleges System, including 13 years as a superintendent/president in two districts. Most recently, she headed the Southwestern Community College District in Chula Vista.

Murillo is the third person to serve as interim superintendent and president of SBCC since former Superintendent Anthony Beebe retired for health-related reasons in 2019.

The Board of Trustees approved the amended contract with a 6-1 vote last week, with Trustee Veronica Gallardo dissenting. She has previously objected to the housing allowance included in the contract.

The board includes seven elected members and one SBCC student trustee who can cast advisory votes.
