Ryan Gay of the SBCC men’s golf team shot a 6-under par 64 to take the first-round lead of the 64th Santa Barbara City Golf Championship on Saturday at the par-70 Santa Barbara Golf Club.
Gay is three shots ahead of second-place Ethan Reddy, a former CIF-Southern Section golf champion from Villa Park, and two shots in front of defending City champion Leo Metzger of San Marcos High, Lako Losarah of Upland, Mitch Martin of San Luis Obispo and Connor McManigal of Santa Barbara.
Thayer White, the 2020 City Champion, is among four players who are five shots back after shooting 69s. Eight golfers, including San Marcos CIF-SS golf champion team members Jeffrey Forster and Shams Jahangir-Arshad are at even par.
The annual Memorial Day-weekend tournament is a 54-hole event. There will be a cut after Sunday’s second round.
In the net-scoring flights, John Guardino shot a 71 to take a one-shot lead over Chris Hantgin and Brody Ricci in the Hogan Flight; Pollo Sotelo fired a 1-under 69 to lead the Nicklaus Flight; Jeff Chaffin is the leader of the Palmer Flight with a 71; Jen Sorosky and Laguna Blanca golf standout Jayla Provance share the lead in the Women’s Flight at 75.
