A section of the Shoreline Park bluffs in Santa Barbara collapsed from the weekend rainstorm.

City officials have put up a fence around the area that slid down, and are considering rerouting the nearby sidewalk.

“We experienced some significant coastal bluff erosion with the storm event that occurred in December and over this past weekend,” said Jill Zachary, city parks and recreation director. “We have caution tape around those areas and put in temporary fencing.”

Parks and Recreation crews noticed the erosion on Sunday while inspecting parks and clearing drains.

Zachary said the city is exploring opportunities to relocate the fence so people can enjoy the park and remain safe.

The city has experienced significant coastal bluff erosion since the storms a year ago, she said, and it is especially noticeable now because Shoreline Park is so well-used.

Zachary also warned people to be careful while on the beach below the bluffs.

“We always say, never sit at the base of the bluff,” Zachary said. “It’s just not a great place to be anytime of the year. Bluff erosion occurs year-round or when we have had significant weather events.”

High tides also contribute to bluff erosion, she said.

Santa Barbara Fire Chief Chris Mailes said the ground is very saturated and that people should protect themselves near the bluffs.

“There is unstable soil there, and we just recommend that people stay well behind the fences,” Mailes said.
