One of the most common questions seniors and their families eventually face is also one of the hardest: Is it better to remain at home with additional support, or is it time to consider a senior living community?

There is no single answer that is right for everyone. Health, independence, safety, finances, social connection, family support and personal preferences all play a role. But one thing can make the decision much easier: learning about your options before you actually need them.

Too often, families begin exploring senior care after something has already happened—a fall, hospitalization, change in mobility or an increased need for day-to-day assistance. Suddenly, decisions that deserve careful consideration have to be made quickly and under stress.

Planning ahead doesn’t mean you’re ready to move or that you need home care today. It simply means understanding what resources are available so that you and your family are better prepared if your needs change in the future.

When Staying at Home Makes Sense

For many seniors, remaining in the home they love is the first choice. Home care can provide additional assistance while allowing someone to maintain familiar routines and surroundings.

Depending on an individual’s needs, support might include help with meals, transportation, personal care, household tasks or companionship. For someone who is comfortable and safe at home and has an appropriate support system, this can be a wonderful option.

However, families also need to consider how needs may change over time. How much assistance will eventually be required? Is the home safe and accessible? Is there family nearby? Could isolation become an issue? And what will increasing levels of care cost?

These are much easier questions to explore when there isn’t an immediate crisis.

When Senior Living May Be the Better Choice

Senior living communities can offer something very different: housing, services, activities, meals, social interaction and varying levels of assistance all within one community.

For some seniors, the social component alone can make an enormous difference. Instead of maintaining a home and coordinating different services, they may enjoy having activities, friends, meals and support readily available.

There are also many different types of senior living, which can make the process confusing for families who are encountering it for the first time. Understanding what each option provides—and when a particular level of care might be appropriate—is an important part of planning.

You Don’t Have to Make a Decision to Start Planning

Perhaps the biggest misconception about exploring senior living or home care is that gathering information means you’re committing to something. It doesn’t.

Learning about your choices at 70 or 75 doesn’t mean you’re moving out of your home. Touring a community doesn’t mean you’re moving in. Asking about home care doesn’t mean you need a caregiver.

Knowledge simply gives you choices.

Having these conversations early also allows seniors to be part of the decision-making process. Rather than having family members determine what should happen during an emergency, seniors can communicate what they want, what is important to them and what kind of future they envision for themselves.
