Shadow’s Fund will host its annual benefit to support operation of its 100-acre sanctuary in northern Santa Barbara County on Sunday, Nov. 16.

This year’s event, called There’s No Place Like Home, will be held at The Maker’s Son in Los Alamos, and includes food, wine and a silent auction.

The fundraiser will highlight Shadow’s Fund’s innovative work helping dogs remain in their homes; supporting adoption of shelter dogs into loving families; and – for those who need a little extra – providing a sanctuary that feels like a home rather than a shelter.

Founded in 2009, Shadow’s Fund earned a reputation for advocating for dogs often overlooked for adoption: seniors, pit bull-type dogs, and those facing medical or behavioral challenges.

On 100 acres in Lompoc, Shadow’s Fund built the first-of-its-kind sanctuary where dogs live in furnished studios, not kennels, complete with couches, televisions, and spacious outdoor yards.

“Most of the dogs who come to us have experienced trauma and suffer from chronic stress or anxiety,” said Jill Anderson, co-founder of Shadow’s Fund. “The environment we’ve created is one of our most powerful tools for healing.

“By reducing pressure and creating a safe, home-like space, we give dogs the chance to recover on their own terms.

“Reaching dogs once thought to be unreachable has given us unique insight into dog behavior, insight we use to help families keep their pets and to prepare shelter dogs for adoption.”

The benefit supports the operation of the sanctuary, currently home to 53 dogs, as well as horses and pigs, and funds community programs that prevent pets from entering shelters and help shelter dogs find permanent homes.
