Following news that firefighters reached 90% containment on the Lake Fire, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office canceled all evacuation orders and warnings on Tuesday.

A Los Padres National Forest closure remains in effect for some roads, trails and recreational areas, including campgrounds, affected by the fire. That closure order is in effect until Aug. 18, but could be extended or rescinded early, officials said.

The fire spared popular Figueroa Mountain area campgrounds.

As of Tuesday, the Lake Fire burning in the eastern Santa Ynez Valley charred 38,664 acres.

Santa Barbara County officials have resources for residents returning home after evacuating, and forms to report fire damage, on the readysbc.org website.

Incident commanders are demobilizing the firefighting resources dispatched to the blaze, which numbered more than 3,500 at the peak.

“The heat signatures detected within the Lake Fire perimeter are decreasing with each passing day,” fire officials said Tuesday morning.

“Firefighters will continue to seek out and extinguish these smoldering spots until they are certain there is no longer a threat to the established control lines. Many of the hot spots are burning out on their own as heavy fuels burn down to ash. 

“Many of the assigned resources are no longer needed and are being released from the incident to be reassigned to other fires or travel home for some well-earned rest. Total assigned personnel dropped to below 1,000 yesterday. Fire managers are in the process of repositioning much of the heavy equipment previously assigned to the contingency group. Bulldozers, graders and other equipment are now tasked with repairing dozer lines and roadways impacted by fire operations,” officials said in a morning briefing.

The Lake Fire started near Zaca Lake on July 5 and quickly grew to become California’s largest wildfire so far this year. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
