A man suffered major injuries on Wednesday in a shooting near a business in north Santa Maria.

At about 11:23 a.m.,  officers from the Santa Maria Police Department were sent to the area of Donovan Road and North Broadway on a report of a shooting that had just occurred, Lt. Andy Magallon said.

Officers quickly located evidence of the shooting that took place near an open business, Magallon added.

A short time later, officers found an adult male victim who had been transported to the hospital by private vehicle, Magallon said.

The victim suffered at least one gunshot wound, and was in critical condition, he added.

“This shooting occurred during a busy time of day, and detectives believe there are witnesses who may have additional information,” Magallon said.

The investigation was turned over to department detectives and the Crime Lab.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Police Department Communications Center at 805.928.3781, ext. 227, or the anonymous tip line at 805.928.3781,  ext. 2677.
