Bishop Diego ran out of gas on Saturday and fell to Thacher, 60-29, in the championship of the Thacher boys basketball tournament.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our guys, we were short-handed and we have played quite a few games these past few days, but we battled all the way to the end,” said coach James Coronado. “That heart and determination will pay dividends later in the season. We did a lot of great things today, many of them that won’t show up in a box score, but a couple of plays go our way and it’s a totally different story.”

Tyler Vondriska led a balanced attack for Thacher with 17 points. The  Toads are 6-0 with four wins by 30 or more.

Austin Ziehl, the only senior on the team, led Bishop with 11 points. Sophomore standout Kai Morphy earned all-tournament honors after battling a box-and-1 defense on Saturday.

“Kai had to do a lot for us today and he had many things stacked against him but I never saw him put his head down,” said Coronado. “That’s what leaders do, and again, I know this will pay off in the long run. Austin did a great job making all-tournament as well. I appreciate his great attitude and leadership. We will be back, this is only the beginning and we are making great strides.”
