Pressure by Laguna Blanca forward Franky Baron on the Thacher goalkeeper forced a turnover and he capitalized with the only goal of the game, as the Owls claimed a 1-0 boys soccer win on Thursday.

Laguna Blanca goalkeeper Caden Weaver preserved the shutout with a save off the post.

Coach Rick Rodriguez praised defenders Gabriel Lea, Cole Sharpton, Robbie Dunn and Finlay Sutherland for minimizing the shots taken at Laguna Blanca’s goal.

The CIF small schools powers played to a scoreless draw in their Tri-Valley League match in Los Olivos.

“Today, we did a much better job of working together, playing to our strengths, using our width, and playing the ball back when needed,” said Cate coach Jorge Reynoso. “We got some quality minutes from freshmen Lucian Tann, Alex Gallegos and Kiy Barry. They were able to come in and adapt to the style of play and the flow of the game.

“Thanks to the overall team effort, freshmen goalkeeper Quincy Thorne had a somewhat quiet evening and recorded his second clean sheet of the season.”

Girls Soccer

Buena 3, Santa Barbara 1

The Santa Barbara High girls soccer team lost its goalkeeper to an injury in the first 15 minutes, and Buena capitalized with two quick goals en route to a 3-1 Channel League win over the Dons.

Camila Jeronimo scored for Santa Barbara on a breakaway.

Coach Willie Sims praised the play of Tania Vallecillo and Carolina Esparza.

Santa Barbara is 0-2 in league.

Dos Pueblos 0, Rio Mesa 0

“We had a game plan, we executed and came away with a point,” said coach Marco Medina. “I am pleased with how the players have responded given the challenges presented early in the season.”
Freshman goalkeeper Jocelyn Symons recorded the shutout in her high school debut.

Medina also lauded the backline of Natalia Kaupas, Trisha Lo, Riley Monroe and Ana Jevremovic.

The Chargers (2-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in league) play San Marcos on Tuesday.

Ventura 3, San Marcos 0

The San Marcos girls soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision against Ventura in a Channel League match.

The Cougars scored two goals midway through the first half and made it 3-0 in the first five minutes of the second half.

It was the first time in two years the Royals lost three straight matches, said coach Brian Ziegenhagen.

“We are very humbled by these experiences which the team is going through at the moment. We have been playing extremely well but just can’t find the final product,” he said.

San Marcos plays its third game of the week at Saint Bonaventure on Friday.

Laguna Blanca 3, Villanova Prep 1

Jacqueline Richardson scored two goals and Emma Schubert had one as the Owls came back from a 1-0 deficit and won at home.
