Santa Barbara High softball slugged its way to a 19-4 non-league win over Carpinteria High on Tuesday.
The duo of Bea Southern and Dayzia Mendoza led a 19-hit effort for the Dons, driving in a combined six runs and scoring eight. Southern went 4-for-4 with 4 RBI while Mendoza roped three doubles and scored four times.
“This was truly a team win today,” Santa Barbara High head coach Julie Kittle said. “We have a hefty 15-person roster, and every single player contributed. The team is pumped on the win.”
After a scoreless first, the Dons plated four runs in the second thanks to doubles from Mendoza and Laila Hernandez and singles by Southern and Ava Karman.
Santa Barbara High continued to roll with three more runs in the third before blowing the game wide open with 10 runs in the fourth inning to bring the lead to 17-0.
An inside-the-park home run by Alanah Salas headlined a two-run fifth inning to extend the lead to 19-0. The Warriors scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Dons held on for the mercy-rule win.
Salas and Alina Magdaleno each went 2-for-2 on the day while Karman went 4-for-5 with three RBI. Jazmin Sierra made her debut with three hits and three stolen bases.
In the circle, Madison Benedict tossed 4 ⅓ scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out four. Karman pitched in relief.
“Madison did a great job on the rubber today, she was very efficient with lots of ground balls and our defense was amazing,” Kittle said.
Bishop Diego 13, Foothill Tech 2
The Cardinals had a strong offensive day of their own in a win over Foothill Tech on Tuesday at Ventura College.
“The girls have really come together and played as a team today,” Bishop Diego head coach MeLinda Matsumoto said. “We were able to win every inning and kept up the energy to get the job done to get our first league victory.”
Bishop Diego began the scoring in the first inning when Keke Flores was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Penny Carroll roped a two-run single.
They added six more runs in the second, with run-scoring hits coming off the bats of Sarah Fellers, Chelsea Hayes and Kayla Franco Lucatero.
In the third inning, the Cardinals extended their lead to 10-1 on an RBI single from Flores.
Carroll led the Bishop Diego offense, going 3-for-3 on the day. Meanwhile, Hayes, Carroll, Fellers and Flores all drove in two runs for the Cardinals.
Madeline Ferries started the game in the circle, allowing one earned run over three innings of work. Tara Gregson took over and tossed two shutout innings of relief.
Bishop Diego will take on Grace on the road on Thursday.
