Firefighters worked to extricate a driver after his vehicle knocked down a power pole and ended up in a roadside ditch late Saturday night in the Lompoc Valley.

Emergency personnel from the Santa Barbara County and Lompoc fire departments were dispatched at approximately 10:20 p.m. to the crash on Purisima Road, county fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said.

The extrication effort lasted approximately 30 minutes before firefighters freed the man from the wreckage, he added.

The driver suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria.

The toppled power pole stretched across Purisima Road, which was closed due to the crash and repairs needed.

Some 41 customers were affected by a power outage that spanned more than 12 hours, according to Pacific Gas & Electric Company.

California Highway Patrol officers from the Buellton area were investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
