Question: What motivated you to start this health and wellness business, and what inspired the specific services or products you offer?
Answer: In 2008 when our country fell into a deep recession, many of the local food banks and agencies jumped into action to help. But, we noticed that most of the food being distributed (baked goods, canned items, salty snacks, boxed meals etc) was highly processed and loaded with sugar, sodium and unhealthy fats and oils.
From our years of experience traveling the world for work in the health and wellness industry, we knew the quality of the food being provided was detrimental to health and longevity. This was especially true for anyone diagnosed with a condition such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer or other chronic illness.
As avid cooks and health advocates, we were inspired to start making fresh batches of homemade soup to share with our neighbors in need. That labor of love grew organically through the years.

Today, 15 years later, the purpose and mission remain the same: provide nourishing soups made from clean, whole food, medicinal quality ingredients that support healthy aging and vitality.
Q: Can you provide an overview of the unique value proposition of your business and how it distinguishes itself in the crowded wellness market?
A: We are the only agency handcrafting and delivering delicious, ready to heat and serve, complete balanced SoupMeals.
Our team does everything from sourcing premium ingredients and fresh produce from local organic farms to handcrafting Mediterranean diet inspired recipes formulated to healthy aging and vitality. From our downtown distribution center, we deliver SoupMeals across Santa Barbara County through a network of 50+ community partners.
We operate as a social enterprise nonprofit which means that residents can purchase our SoupMeals in store at 126 E. Haley Street or at www.organicsoupkitchen.org and 100% of the proceeds support our mission to provide nutrition and food security to low income seniors with cancer and chronic illness.
Q: How do you ensure that your services or products align with current health trends and consumer needs?
A: Nutrition plays a vital role in health and longevity. We offer consumers an alternative to processed and ultra processed foods that research indicates is full of added sugar, sodium and unhealthy fats and oils and directly linked to certain cancers and chronic diseases.
We have spent more than a decade researching and refining our ingredients and recipes to ensure that every SoupMeal is made from whole foods and free from added toxins, additives or preservatives.
Q: What strategies do you employ to maintain a high standard of quality and consistency across your offerings?
A: We employ the highest standard of quality and integrity using 80-90% organic ingredients procured from our region’s finest purveyors.
We meticulously handcraft 26 different SoupMeal recipes at our state of the art industrial size kitchen in downtown Santa Barbara.
Our team is trained and certified annually in food preparation, packaging and refrigeration. All of our SoupMeals are packaged in earth friendly biodegradable containers and hermetically sealed to prevent airborne pathogens.
Q: How do you approach customer feedback and incorporate it into improving your business?
A: We welcome customer feedback and use it to improve our communication, recipe offerings and delivery service.
Q: How do you stay informed about regulatory changes and industry standards relevant to your business?
A: Our leadership team has more than 40 years experience in the organic health food industry. Through extensive research, development and collaboration with leading medical professionals, we have remained at the forefront of the nutrition industry and “food is medicine” movement.
Q: What role do partnerships or collaborations play in your business strategy, and how do you select potential partners that align with your brand values?
A: As a nonprofit community safety net, we bridge the nutrition gap for those who are disproportionately impacted by health and financial challenges.
To expand our reach and accessibility, we build partnerships and collaborate with community agencies aligned with our mission. We are the leading referral source for oncologists, nurses, dieticians, social workers and other referring staff at more than 25 of the County’s leading health and human service agencies.
Q: How do you prioritize sustainability and environmental responsibility in your business operations and product offerings?
A: We partner with local farms to procure fresh organic produce for our recipes. Approximately 85% of our ingredients are organic. Using clean, whole food ingredients straight from the farm not only benefits individuals, it also supports the health of the planet.

Our robust zero waste food stabilization program contributes to the local food economy, encourages the diversification of crop variety and supports soil health in our community. It also reduces our organizations carbon footprint by approximately 20%. We are a proud member of 1% for the Planet.
Q: Can you discuss any plans for expansion or diversification of your health and wellness business in the future?
A: In July 2023, we opened a new 1,000 square foot second location to serve as a hub for distribution and education. This expansion has been part of our organization’s vision and will help us to remain at the forefront of nutrition and food security in Santa Barbara County.
The new facility will help us achieve the following goals over the next 5 years: serve additional community members; increase community collaboration, awareness and educational programs; and increase our robust zero waste food stabilization program.
Q: Finally, what do you believe sets your health and wellness business apart from competitors, and how do you maintain a competitive edge in the market?
A: We are a non-profit operating as a social enterprise. In 2020, we started selling SoupMeals out of the back door of our kitchen, almost accidentally, when individuals would ask.
As word got out about our high quality, delicious tasting soups, demand rapidly grew. Today, we sell SoupMeals to the general public both online and at our storefront at 126 E. Haley Street.
All of the proceeds from soup sales goes back into the nonprofit to support our low income clients and expand our accessibility to underserved populations.
