A Santa Barbara man who allegedly brandished a spearfishing gun at officers was arrested Wednesday evening after a standoff, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.

Officers were dispatched at about 5:40 p.m. to a check-the-welfare call at a residence on the 200 block of West De la Guerra Street, Sgt. Ethan Ragsdale said.

“While investigating, a subject brandished a loaded spearfishing gun at officers while standing on the porch,” Ragsdale said.

Officers called for additional resources, including the armored rescue vehicle that was staged nearby.

“The subject, later identified as 46-year-old Jaime Keith Meyer of Santa Barbara, refused to follow the officers’ commands and would not drop his weapon,” Ragsdale said.

After about an hour of negotiations, Meyer agreed to move to a safe location away from the home, Ragsdale said, and eventually was detained without incident.

Meyer, who was wearing only a pair of shorts, was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on suspicion of brandishing a weapon.
