Wellness is as personal as it is universal. It encompasses the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of our lives, contributing to an overall sense of well-being.
In today’s fast-paced world, where stress and distractions abound, cultivating wellness becomes paramount. It empowers individuals to navigate life’s challenges with resilience, fostering a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
Noozhawk’s annual Wellness Guide celebrates this diversity and provides a platform to explore and enhance wellness in all its forms. Our aim with this guide is to equip our audience with the tools necessary for enhancing their wellness routines.
Through a series of interviews with various local wellness businesses, Noozhawk brings you insights and resources to support your journey towards improved well-being.
We believe that by sharing the expertise and experiences of these businesses, we can empower our readers to make informed decisions about their health and wellness, ultimately fostering a happier and more fulfilling lifestyle.
In this interview, Noozhawk spoke with Kyle Cetrulo, President of Stem Cell Athlete to learn more about their services.
Question: What motivated you to start this health and wellness business, and what inspired the specific services or products you offer?
Answer: My father, a retired Maternal Fetal Medicine trained OB/GYN doctor, was a pioneer in the umbilical cord blood banking field.

When I was in high school, he excitedly shared an article from the New England Journal of Medicine about using umbilical cord blood to help people needing bone marrow transplants. He immediately recognized the potential of saving these precious hematopoietic stem cells from being discarded after every birth.
This inspired me to pursue a business focused on harnessing the power of perinatal stem cells to improve health and save lives.
Q: Can you provide an overview of the unique value proposition of your business and how it distinguishes itself in the crowded wellness market?
A: The International Perinatal Stem Cell Society, Inc. (Perinatal Society), a 501(c)3 non-profit, is leading efforts to change U.S. regulations and enable access to safe, affordable perinatal-derived stem cell treatments. Founded in 2013, we support patients and advocate for stem cell therapy as a fundamental right.
Our unique focus on perinatal stem cells, which have greater therapeutic potential than adult stem cells, sets us apart in the wellness market. Despite worldwide evidence of efficacy and safety, access remains limited in the U.S. due to current policies and funding challenges.
Q: How do you ensure that your services or products align with current health trends and consumer needs?
A: As a non-profit focused on advancing stem cell therapies, our mission aligns with the needs of all people who could benefit from these treatments. Perinatal stem cells offer immense potential to meet a wide range of health needs.
We stay attuned to scientific developments and patient requests to ensure our advocacy efforts match the current state of the field and the treatments people are seeking.
Q: What strategies do you employ to maintain a high standard of quality and consistency across your offerings?
A: The Perinatal Society has earned a reputation for scientific excellence through our work editing three perinatal textbooks and hosting eight cutting-edge conferences featuring world-leading scientists and companies. The agendas and 85+ scientific lectures from these conferences are available on our website, www.perinatalstemcells.com.
We maintain high standards by bringing together top experts, listening to patients, engaging with the FDA on regulations, and contributing to the growing scientific knowledge in this field.
Q: How do you approach customer feedback and incorporate it into improving your business?
A: As a membership organization consisting of leading scientists, laboratories and companies, we gather feedback from our members to inform our priorities.
Our goal is to keep the community current on the latest breakthroughs and develop conference agendas that share this information. At our conferences, we listen to patients’ requests for access to perinatal stem cell treatments. This feedback guides our advocacy efforts to improve access.
Q: How do you stay informed about regulatory changes and industry standards relevant to your business?

A: The Perinatal Society is actively advocating for new legislation mirroring Japan’s Regenerative Medicine Act of 2014, which created a regulatory framework allowing patient access to stem cell therapy while maintaining oversight and providing a pathway for companies to navigate the approval process.
We believe the U.S. needs a similar approach recognizing that stem cells require a different regulatory framework than small molecule drugs. Our proposed bill would allow patients to gain access by enabling companies to have paying participants in Phase II and III trials, funding later-stage research. We stay informed on these issues to effectively advocate for change.
Q: What role do partnerships or collaborations play in your business strategy, and how do you select potential partners that align with your brand values?
A: Partnerships are integral to our work. We’ve created a Manufacturing Committee as a venue for perinatal stem cell and tissue product manufacturers to collaborate and advance the field. The committee supports manufacturers’ needs and provides them an independent voice.
As a non-profit, the Perinatal Society can speak for manufacturers without fearing FDA repercussions. We select partners committed to acting collectively in the interests of patients, which aligns with our values of enabling access to safe, effective treatments.
If you or your organization is interested in supporting the Perinatal Society to advance our mission please reach out through our website or call directly.
Q: How do you envision your business evolving to meet the changing needs and preferences of consumers in the health and wellness industry?
A: While the U.S. has leading hospitals, doctors and scientific resources, we are falling behind other countries in stem cell research and therapy due to our current regulatory framework and funding mechanisms.
Our proposed plan, mirroring Japan’s system, would enable patients to sponsor their own treatment in Phase II and III clinical trials, as many are already paying for such therapies at offshore clinics. We believe U.S. hospitals and labs could match or surpass the quality of offshore stem cell products.
Once trials are complete and treatments approved, insurance should cover the costs. This would drive competition, innovation and access for patients. As consumer demand for stem cell therapies grows, our work to reform the U.S. system positions us to meet evolving needs and preferences.
Q: Finally, what do you believe sets your health and wellness business apart from competitors, and how do you maintain a competitive edge in the market?
A: Our legislative efforts to bring safe, affordable stem cell therapies to the U.S. set us apart as leaders in this space. While we work towards systemic change, Stem Cell Athlete can facilitate treatments under the current regulatory framework and internationally.
This multi-pronged approach—driving policy reforms, supporting scientific advancement through our conferences and publications, and enabling access now through our partners—gives us a competitive edge to make a real difference for patients in a rapidly-evolving field.
