Laguna Blanca football’s offense once again took center stage as the Owls defeated Coast Union by a score of 50-32 in the opening round of the CIF-SS Div. 2 8-Person Football Playoffs on Friday.
The Owls got a trio of rushing touchdowns in the first half from Josh Hansen, Nahum Duron-Angeles and Spencer Hlavaty.
Hlavaty also got the job done through the air to the tune of four passing touchdowns, connecting with both Gabe Lea and Sam Narva twice.
Laguna Blanca got rock solid offensive line play, led by James Couvillion, who played center and snapped with his non-dominant hand due to an injury on his right hand.
“I’ve coached offensive line for nine years, usually when you have your center who is cleared to play but can’t snap, you move them to guard and vice versa, which causes a shuffle and multiple guys out of position,” Owls coach Matthew Escobar said.
“For James to find a way to snap with his non-dominant hand and have a near flawless performance, it is quite remarkable. (It was) something I’ve never seen before, it allowed our offensive line to stay on schedule and play aggressively led by his leadership, attitude and tenacity.”
Laguna Blanca will hit the road next week to take on Milken High.
