The Bishop Diego girls came from behind for their 18th win Saturday, 33-30 over host St. Bonaventure in a Tri-Valley League game.
The Cardinals trailed 16-8 in the second quarter and were down 19-13 at halftime.
“We struggled offensively early,” Bishop Diego coach Jeff Burich said. “We took great shots but we just couldn’t get anything to fall.”
Then, “Lara Heinichen was a spark off the bench and we scored the first seven points of the second half. The girls overcame our offense struggles with tough defense and defensive rebounding.”
Jiali Coronado led Bishop Diego with nine points and Lily Simolon had eight points and 11 rebounds.
“Jiali played a great game defensively, guarding people in the post and getting several tipped passes into their post player,” Burich said. “Lily was everywhere today, attacking the basket and getting several key rebounds late.
“I couldn’t be more proud of how the girls played. They communicated well on defense and really picked each other up. This is a tough place to play and credit the girls for grinding it out.”
The Cardinals are now 2-0 in TVL play and 18-2 overall. They play at home Tuesday against Foothill Tech, also 2-0 in league play.
