A Santa Maria man was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on Sunday night after allegedly stabbing another man to death, according to the Santa Maria Police Department.

Officers and other emergency personnel were dispatched shortly after 9:30 p.m. to an apartment on the 300 block of East McElhany Street, said Lt. Daniel Rios.

They found the victim suffering stab wounds, and rendered medical aid.

The patient was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center, where he later was pronounced dead, Rios said.

The victim’s name was not released pending notification of relatives.

Investigators identified the suspect in the killing as Gustavo Hernandez, 59, Rios said.

He was taken into custody without incident at a nearby residence, and was being held on suspicion of homicide, with bail set at $2 million.

This was the second homicide of the year in the city of Santa Maria.
