Officers responding to a report of a man smashing vehicle windows in downtown Santa Barbara arrested a suspect Tuesday night in De la Guerra Plaza.

The incident began at about 6:45 p.m., according to Sgt. Chris Payne of the Santa Barbara Police Department.

A man matching the suspect’s description was located in the plaza, but fled on foot when he was ordered by officers to stop, Payne said.

A brief foot pursuit ensued, in and out of De la Guerra Plaza, but the suspect — Miguel Garibay, 34 — was apprehended, Payne said.

He was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on suspicion of resisting arrest and a probation violation, Payne said, adding that the incident remained under investigation.
