Suzanne Elaine DeAngelis “Suzie” Allen was a true Californian: she was born in San Francisco on December 1, 1953; spent her childhood in Los Angeles; and worked in the Ojai Valley before settling in Santa Barbara to raise her two children.

Suzie died on February 18, 2025.

Suzie met her husband, Fred, while working at Wells Fargo Bank. Fred was so humbly captivated by her that he invited the entire branch out to lunch just to sit beside her.

Later, Suzie named the Matilija Poppies “fried eggs” in her colorful commute through the super blooms of Highway 150 to Ojai, where she was relocated in exchange for their relationship. Fred and Suzie married in Pasadena, California, in 1983.

Suzie immersed herself in the communities of her children’s Montessori School, Laguna Blanca School, her neighborhood, the Rotary Club, the Adirondack League Club, and at Williams Sonoma where she worked “for the discount.”

She was an avid reader, traveler and crossword puzzler. She moved large completed sections of a jigsaw puzzle with a spatula on her game table.

Her memory for names, dates, history and trivia was unmatched. She had an affinity for rabbits. She loved her family.

Suzie lost a major part of herself when Fred died in 2017, but she listed her grandson, Beau Frederick, as her greatest joy in the months before her passing.

Suzie is survived by her children, Hannah (Jared) of Oak View, California, and John (Megan) of Los Angeles; sisters Corinne, Gloria and Marcie; her grandson, Beau; stepchildren Christina and Charlie; and her step-grandchildren, Avery, Callaway, Cassidy and Brooks; plus many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.

Suzie’s memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 24, at All Saints By-the-Sea Episcopal Church, at 83 Eucalyptus Lane in Santa Barbara.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bunnies Urgently Needing Shelter (BUNS) in Santa Barbara.
