Santa Barbara County is blessed with a diversity of vital nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving the health, well-being, growth, civic leadership and compassion of our community.
Charitable giving and philanthropy are part of our identity, which is why Noozhawk is proud to support the nonprofit community through sponsoring local community organizations and events.
To showcase our support of the event, Cost Of Silence, Noozhawk spoke with Kathy Kelley, Development Director of The Marjorie Luke Theatre to learn more about their event.
The Marjorie Luke Theatre
Question: What is the name and date of your event?
Answer: The Cost of Silence on September 14th, 2025.
Q: What is the mission, goal, and/or theme of this occasion?
A: The Marjorie Luke Theatre is excited to continue our Green Film Series in 2025, presenting thought-provoking films, engaging panel discussions, and inspiring speakers—all centered on pressing environmental issues. With a focus on California, particularly the Central Coast, this series fosters awareness and dialogue about the challenges and solutions shaping our planet’s future.
Q: Have you held this event before?
A: The Green Film Series began in April 2024. We successfully hosted three films in 2024, Greetings From Summerland (Harry Rabin), The Doctrine of Recovery (Leslee Goodman) and Giants Rising ( Lisa Landers).
Q: Tell us some more details about your celebration?
A: The Marjorie Luke Theatre’s Green Film Series will host the West Coast premiere of The Cost of Silence, nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.
This searing documentary exposes the concealment of a human health disaster following the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill — and how a cover-up allowed the same toxic response methods to be cemented into national spill response plans.
Today, the film reveals that every coastal community, including Santa Barbara, faces a
largely unknown and potentially deadly threat. Following the screening, the event will feature a community forum designed to share the latest information and provide ways audiences can engage in the issue through the introduction of ENGAGESTREAM, a custom-eng.
Q: How do people get involved with your event? (volunteer, attend, etc.) – If your event includes ticket sales, please note the price and include a link to purchase tickets.
A: Please attend this important film!
Ticket Prices: General Admission $15, Student/Seniors $10
You can purchase tickets here!
Q: Is this a fundraising affair? If so, how will the funds raised help your organization?
A: No, it is not a fundraising event.

A: We are grateful for our generous Green Film Series sponsors:
- Manitou Foundation
- Zeger Family Foundation
- Sierra Club

Q: Do you work with an Event Planner? If not, who are the key people who make it all happen?
A: No for the event manager, our Development Director, Kathy Kelley produces our Green Film Series with the support of our staff and our Board members.
Q: Does your organization have any other upcoming events this year?
