
Michelle Arellanes and Mia Martinez-Tomatis each scored 19 points, and the San Marcos defense turned in a solid effort in a 60-53 girls basketball win over San Marcos of the CIF San Diego Section in a Green Division first-round game of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions on Tuesday at the Thunderhut.
In other Green Division action, Dos Pueblos dropped a 57-43 decision against Camarillo; Oaks Christian defeated San Luis Obispo, 51-26, and Del Notre of San Diego beat host Santa Barbara, 59-32.
Top-seeded Bishop Montgomery won its opener in the Gold Division, beating Oxnard-Pacifica, 65-47; second-seeded Redondo Union handed Orcutt Academy its first loss of the season, 45-32, Granada Hills beat Oxnard, 63-48, and Westlake edged Hart, 47-46.
In Gold semifinal games on Wednesday, Bishop Montgomery and Westlake square off at 5:30 p.m. at Santa Barbara High followed by Granada Hills and Westlake at 7 p.m.
Pacifica and Hart play at 2:30 p.m. and Oxnard and Orcutt Academy face off at 4 p.m. in consolation games at Santa Barbara.
At the Thunderhut, San Marcos takes on Camarillo at 7 p.m. and Oaks Christian and Del Notre meet at 5:30 in the Green Division semifinals.
Dos Pueblos faces San Diego-San Marcos at 2:30 p.m., followed by Santa Barbara against San Luis Obispo at 4 p.m.
San Marcos 60, SD-San Marcos 53
The host Royals held the Knights to three points in the first quarter and built a 32-15 lead by halftime.
“We played another solid, disciplined defensive game overall,” said coach Tiffany Sims. “Michelle and Mia were scoring machines for us, attacking the basket and shooting when open.”
Arellanes hit all four of her free throws in the fourth quarter and Ellie Monson scored eight of her 12 points in the quarter to hold off a comeback by the Knights.
Kyra Quinn scored 18 points and Ava Wiedermann had 15 for San Marcos of San Diego.
Camarillo 57, Dos Pueblos 43
Emily Peralta scored 24 points to lead the Scorpions to the win.
“We played a very experienced Camarillo team that had a really good senior duo that gave us trouble,” said DP coach Manny Murillo. “We slowed down one of them but the other caught fire, and their role players stepped up and hit their shots and out rebounded us.”
Justine Katz had 20 points and Carly Letendre added 15 to lead Dos Pueblos (5-4)
“They threw different looks at Justine and she made good reads driving, shooting, and passing to her teammates,” said Murillo.
The Chargers struggled in the second half, scoring only 12 points.
Del Notre 59, Santa Barbara 32
Bailey Barnhard scored 17 of her 28 points in the first quarter for Del Notre, which raced out to a 22-8 lead.
Dayzia Mendoza led Santa Barbara with 23 points and five rebounds.
