Dos Pueblos track & field claimed a pair of victories at the County Championships on Saturday in Lompoc. Local schools Santa Barbara High and San Marcos also competed.

The Charger boys totaled 140 points as a team, finishing well ahead of second-place Lompoc, who finished at 83. Meanwhile, the girls edged out the Royals by a margin of 106-103.5.

Boys

The Dos Pueblos boys found plenty of success in the races, including individual victories from Gabe Runyen (200 meter) and Andrew Gentry (400 meter).

Meanwhile, the Charger 4×100 relay squad of Kaleb Williams, Noah Navarro, Cole Adair and Runyen captured the win in their race.

Rounding out the day for the Dos Pueblos boys was a victory in the 4×400 relay by Gentry, Runyen, Myles Shaddix and Andy Brennan.

Girls

As for the girls, the field-event duo of Emily Raymond and Julia VanDeVeire turned in strong performances to lead the way.

Raymond came in first in the high jump with a mark of 4-10 while VanDeVeire cleared 10-0 in the pole vault to take home first place.

Meanwhile, Kaley Orquiola set a personal record in the long jump at 16-1.

In total, the Chargers registered 37 personal records in the meet.

San Marcos

The Royals had several standouts individually while the girls team placed second on Saturday.

Avery Leck shined all over the track, breaking the country record in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.59 seconds.

On top of making history, Leck also won the high jump, long jump and 100-meter race.

Ava Carter and Kiala Haas were double winners, with Carter taking home the 200-meter (26.59) and 400-meter (58.56) while Haas placed first in the 800-meter (2:26.34) and 1,600-meter (5:26).

“Both of these seniors have been the anchor of our girls team for 4 years,” San Marcos coach Marilyn Hantgin said of Carter and Haas. “I am so proud of both of them for giving all they have to our program.”

Sophia Rollman and Victoria Fernandez joined Carter and Haas on the first-place 4×400-meter relay team.

Ethan Ball (110 hurdles, 15.58) and RJ Robles (pole vault, 12-0) were individual winners for the Royals as well. Meanwhile, Tommy Fealy placed third in the triple jump (41-02) and fourth in the long jump (20-5.5).

The boys frosh/soph 4×100 relay team smashed a 40-year-old program record with a time of 44.95 seconds. The team included Brody Green, Bryan Antov, Cole Dominguez and Remi Boykin.

Green also won the high jump (6-0) and placed second in the 100-meter race (11.60) to round out a strong day.

“I love county championships because the freshman and sophomores get to run against their same-age athletes,” Hantgin said. “We had so many personal best today. We are looking forward to the league finals on Thursday.”

Cate School

The Rams turned in a strong performance at the County meet as well.

Francesca Sutch snagged a pair of second-place finishes in the 800 (2:27) and 1,600-meter races.

For the boys, Everest Schipper came out on top in the 1,600-meter race with a personal record time of 4:24.9.

Schipper’s teammate Sebastian Sutch finished up right behind him in third place with a time of 4:27.8.

Later in the day, Sebastian Sutch won the 800-meter while Everest added a win in the 3,200-meter.

“Everest has really been putting in quality workouts,” Cate coach Tim Weir said. “He should be ready come CIF time to run really well.

“Seb has been slowed by an injury since the start of the season, so getting him back into the races today is a very positive step for him as we head to the League meet and CIF meets. He did not experience any pain today, so that is the best news.”

The Rams will compete in the TCAA Championships in Carpinteria on Friday.

Santa Barbara High

The Dons also had some competitors show out at the County Championships on Saturday.

Sierra Gronquist took third place in the pole vault with a season-best mark of 8-6.

“She’s just getting back to vaulting after missing most of the season with a concussion, so this is a nice step going into league finals next week,” Perdices said.

Meanwhile, Krystal Valdez placed fourth in the discus with a personal best of her own at 105-5.

“She had a great series with all four throws over 100 feet,” Perdices said. “That’s a great way to start the championship season.”

Providence School

The Patriots placed eighth at the Santa Barbara County Championship meet on Saturday.

Kate Edgar collected all of the team points for Providence, earning an individual county title in three different events: long jump, triple jump and 100-meter hurdles.

Meanwhile, Elsabet Schlobohm placed first in the frosh/soph 400-meter race and followed that up by placing fifth in the frosh/soph 1,600-meter race.

“Once again, the girls competed so well,” Patriots coach Lindsay Lettow said. “It’s been so fun to see how they’ve progressed across the season.

“It was extra special to see Kate come out with so many wins at a meet she’s competed at all throughout her high school career and with lots of familiar friends nearby. It was well deserved.”
